Series / Parallel Checking on Smartphone Motherboards
Learn how to identify ground connections and determine series or parallel component relationships on smartphone motherboards using continuity mode.
1. What is Continuity Mode?
Continuity mode checks whether two points in a circuit are electrically connected. If the multimeter beeps, the path is complete.
- • Beep sound → Electrical connection exists
- • No beep → Open line
- • Used for tracing ground and signal paths
- • Helps detect short circuits
2. Setting Multimeter to Continuity Mode
- 1. Turn rotary switch to 🔔 (continuity symbol)
- 2. Use select button to choose continuity mode
- 3. Black probe → COM
- 4. Red probe → VΩ

3. Checking If a Component is Parallel
This method helps determine whether an SMD component is connected to the motherboard ground (GND).
- 1. Black probe → GND (USB shield or frame)
- 2. Red probe → component terminal
- 3. Beep sound → grounded component (Parallel)
- 4. No beep → not connected to ground (Series)
4. Series vs Parallel Connection
- Series: Current flows through components sequentially
- Parallel: Multiple paths for current flow
- Ground capacitors are usually parallel
- Resistors often appear in series signal paths
